World-renowned composer and pianist, Malek Jandali, recognized as a leading figure in today’s piano world will be presenting for the first time at Pentangle with Abdulrahim Alsiadi on oud and Montreal cellist Karen Kaderavek (Known to local audiences from 15+ years with Pentangle and prior to that, 12 years as principal cellist with the VSO). Malek’s compositions integrate Middle Eastern modes into Western classical forms of harmony.  Jandali explains that his music represents a story from Syria – its people, landscape, and especially the children and their quest for peace and justice.  Jandali has performed with orchestras all over the world, and is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, and was recognized as a Great Immigrant by Carnegie Corporation of New York in 2015.

He is also a vocal advocate for victims of human rights abuses at the hand of the Syrian dictatorship, including his own parents.  Hailed by BBC World News as “an acclaimed pianist”, Malek Jandali’s music has been described as “moving and thought provoking” by Bob Stevenson of NPR and “inspiring” by the Huffington Post. His outstanding recordings and extensive concert tours receive immensely positive reviews.  His Carnegie Hall debut performance in January 2015 featured the release of his latest album “Syrian Symphony”, and marked him as the first Arab-American composer to premier his own works at this prestigious venue.  The performance will also feature “Echoes from Ugarit”, which is based on the oldest music notation in the world discovered on a clay tablet in the ancient Mediterranean city of Ugarit.
